Kitchen display FAQ

What chefs and operators ask before going screen-led.

A Kitchen Display System replaces paper tickets in the kitchen with one or more screens showing incoming orders in real time. Tickets are colour-coded by wait time, items route to specific stations (grill, fry, drinks), and chefs tap to mark items in progress or ready — no more lost, smudged or out-of-order paper.
A KDS is purpose-built for kitchen workflow — touch targets sized for gloved hands, audio alerts for new orders, station routing rules, modifier emphasis (large red "NO ONIONS"), prep-time tracking and colour-coded urgency. A generic orders list shows the same data, but it's not optimised for someone reading at arm's length while plating.
Any tablet, laptop or wall-mounted screen with a modern web browser works. iPad, Android tablet, Windows till, Mac, even a phone in a pinch. Many kitchens already have a screen from a previous setup — SmakSpace KDS runs in the browser, so no purpose-built KDS box or proprietary screen is required.
You define stations (Grill, Fryer, Coffee Bar, Cold Prep, Expo) and assign each menu item to one or more. When an order comes in, items split automatically to the right screens — the grill chef sees the steak, the barista sees the latte. The expo screen sees everything to coordinate the plate.
The KDS keeps showing the orders already on screen during a short internet outage; new orders won't arrive until the connection restores. We recommend wired ethernet or a 4G failover for the back-of-house screen if you have a marginal connection.
KDS is included on Professional (NZ$99/mo) and Enterprise (NZ$179/mo) plans. The Starter plan (NZ$49/mo) doesn't include a kitchen display — operators on Starter read orders off a tablet running the orders dashboard. KDS scales to as many screens as you need.
