Food truck FAQ

What mobile operators ask before going digital.

SmakSpace runs in your phone or tablet's browser using whatever connection you have — venue WiFi, 4G hotspot, or 5G phone. The customer ordering page is designed to work on a 3G connection. For festival or market venues with poor signal, we recommend a 4G mobile router as backup — sub-NZ$80 from most NZ carriers.
Yes. QR ordering on a printed sign or chalkboard lets the queue order while they wait — by the time they reach the window, the food is ready. Orders queue on the kitchen screen oldest first, each with a running timer. SmakSpace does not cap orders on its own: if the rush gets ahead of you, switch ordering off in your settings until you catch up, so you don't over-promise during a peak rush spike.
No. A tablet or phone runs ordering, the staff counter till and the kitchen screen. Staff can ring up a walk-up order and take cash with the change due, or mark it paid on the terminal you already carry — there is no cash drawer and no docket printing, and the card itself is never taken through SmakSpace. Your existing mobile EFTPOS terminal (Smartpay Pro, Verifone mobile, mobile Worldline) keeps taking in-person card payments and operates independently of SmakSpace. No printer needed — customers get a digital receipt from their order confirmation page.
Update your venue address or GPS coordinates from the admin panel. Your customer-facing ordering page on my.smakspace.co.nz always shows today's location at the top. Many operators link this through their Instagram bio so followers know exactly where to find you each day without needing to check a separate app.
Yes. Your EFTPOS terminal works independently of SmakSpace, so it keeps taking cards even if the WiFi drops. The SmakSpace self-order kiosk keeps taking orders too: each one is saved on the tablet to pay at the window, staff mark it paid (cash or card) and cook from the kiosk's ticket list, and the tablet sends every order to SmakSpace once the connection is back and the kiosk app is open. QR and online ordering run on customers' own phones, so they keep taking orders while the truck is offline, and those orders reach your kitchen screen when you reconnect. For a long outage, switch QR and online ordering off in your settings from your phone. For a truck we recommend a 4G router as the primary connection and the venue WiFi as backup, not the other way round.
Yes. Starter (NZ$49/mo) is sized for single-truck / single-stall operators — QR ordering, digital menu, payment processing, basic reporting. Move to Professional (NZ$99/mo) when you add a second truck or want loyalty, KDS or bookings (e.g. for catering gigs). No commitment beyond month-to-month.
