In one paragraph

SmakSpace is New Zealand-built hospitality software covering everything around the point of sale — self-order kiosks, QR and online ordering, kitchen display, table layout, bookings, modifier groups and customer loyalty — on one flat NZD subscription. It also runs a staff counter till on a tablet: staff ring up walk-up and phone orders, take cash and see the change due, or mark the order paid on the venue’s own terminal, with one shared ticket list across devices and an offline queue. It does not process card-present payments, print dockets or run a cash drawer, and your existing EFTPOS terminal keeps operating independently beside it. Kiosk-led and order-ahead venues can run on SmakSpace alone; counter-service and table-service venues run it alongside the POS they already have. Pricing starts free — a hosted QR menu at NZ$0 forever, no card — then flat NZD from NZ$49/month (Starter) once you take orders. Self-order kiosks, kitchen display and bookings are on the NZ$99/month Professional plan, where most cafés and restaurants sit. Works on any modern iPad, Android tablet, MacBook or Windows laptop. Free menu setup included on every plan.

What does restaurant POS software include?

Restaurant POS software handles in-house ordering, payment processing, item management and end-of-day reporting. SmakSpace covers the hospitality half of that and the part most tills do badly: self-order kiosks customers order and pay from, kitchen display (so the chef sees orders without a printer), table layout (so floor staff can manage parties and timing), bookings (so reservations and walk-ins live in the same diary), modifier groups (sizes, milks, extras, allergens), commission-free online and QR ordering, customer loyalty, and native accounting integration. Kiosk-led and order-ahead venues run on it with no separate till at all; venues with busy walk-up trade keep a till for the counter and run SmakSpace around it. Retail POS like Shopify POS or Square cover the counter but almost none of the rest.

Restaurant POS software FAQ

Common questions from NZ café and restaurant operators.

Restaurant POS software handles hospitality-specific workflows that retail POS does not: table layouts and party management, kitchen display systems with station routing, modifier groups (sizes, milks, extras, allergens), no-show tracking on bookings, multi-course timing, and integration with hospitality-specific online ordering. Retail POS — including general-purpose options like Shopify POS — is built for selling physical goods at a counter with inventory tracking, and lacks most of the above.
No. SmakSpace runs on any modern iPad, Android tablet, MacBook, Windows laptop or even an iPhone in a stand. If you already have a device for email, social media or browsing, you can run SmakSpace on it. You also keep your existing EFTPOS terminal, and you keep it exactly as it is — SmakSpace does not connect to card terminals or process card-present payments, so nothing about your payment hardware or your merchant agreement has to change. For orders placed online or by QR, customers can pay by card through your own Stripe, Windcave or PayPal account. Kiosk orders are always paid at the counter, on the terminal you already have.
SmakSpace starts free — a hosted QR menu at NZ$0 forever — then flat NZD: NZ$49/month (Starter), NZ$99/month (Professional — recommended), or NZ$179/month (Enterprise — multi-location). No per-transaction surcharge. Compare to Lightspeed Restaurant (NZ$165+/month plus payment processing), Toast (US-pricing, hardware-bundled, not natively in NZ), Square (free POS tier but transaction fees stack up), Shopify POS (US-pricing plus hardware) or EPOS Now (~NZ$649 hardware + monthly fee). Annual billing saves 20%.
For a typical single-venue café or restaurant, setup is designed to reach your first transaction in about 48 hours, with bookings and loyalty fully end-to-end within about a week — including menu import, table layout configuration, KDS setup and an EFTPOS terminal check. Larger multi-venue operations take 1–2 weeks for full rollout. We provide concierge onboarding for everyone, regardless of plan.
Yes. Menu items import via CSV with a downloadable template (name, description, price, categories, ingredients, allergen labels, nutritional info); modifier groups are built with you during onboarding. Menu exports from other POS systems do not import directly. Or photograph your printed menu instead — our AI drafts the items, with categories and sizes, for you to check; nothing goes live until you approve it. Modifier groups such as milks and extra shots are set up with you during onboarding. For customer lists, we offer concierge migration — send us your CSV export from your previous POS and we add them to your SmakSpace account during onboarding.
It depends on how your venue takes orders, and we would rather tell you up front than after you have signed. SmakSpace does have a staff till — counter mode on a tablet, where your team rings up a walk-up or phone order, takes cash and sees the change due, or marks it paid on your own terminal — but no cash drawer, no docket or receipt printing, and no card-present payment through SmakSpace, so it cannot open a drawer or hand over a printed docket the way a traditional POS does. If your orders come in ahead or at a self-order kiosk, and you are card-dominant, SmakSpace can run the whole operation on its own: the customer orders on their phone and pays online, or orders at a kiosk and pays at the counter, and either way the order goes straight to the kitchen display. If you run busy counter service, table service with tabs, or take a lot of cash, keep your POS for the till and run SmakSpace alongside it for ordering, bookings, kitchen display and loyalty. Ask us on a call and we will tell you honestly which of the two you are.
Partly, and here is exactly how. A SmakSpace self-order kiosk keeps taking orders when your internet drops: it saves each order on the tablet to pay at the counter, staff can see and settle them on the kiosk's ticket list, and it sends them to SmakSpace (kitchen screen and reports) once the connection is back. Your standalone EFTPOS terminal keeps taking cards independently. The kitchen display itself needs a connection, and QR and online ordering keep taking orders from customers' own phones while you are offline, so those orders reach the kitchen when you reconnect; for a longer outage, switch QR and online ordering off in your settings. For venues with unreliable signal we recommend a 4G mobile router as backup.
Two ways to start free: a free-forever plan (a hosted QR menu at NZ$0, no card) to get your menu online, or a 14-day free trial of SmakSpace Professional (KDS, bookings, loyalty) with no card required. Cancel anytime during the trial with no charge. After the trial, standard NZD pricing applies, with annual billing saving 20%.
