The NZ alternative to Lightspeed, Kounta & Vend

The NZ-built alternative to Lightspeed —
without the USD surprises.

Many Lightspeed customers in New Zealand report subscription increases and a 1.5% surcharge for using their own EFTPOS. SmakSpace is flat NZD pricing with kitchen display included, supported in NZ time — and we never touch your EFTPOS or your merchant agreement. Kiosk-led venues move off Lightspeed outright; everyone else runs SmakSpace around the till they already have.

In one paragraph

SmakSpace is the New Zealand-built alternative to Lightspeed Restaurant for cafés, restaurants and takeaways: self-order kiosks, QR and online ordering, table bookings, kitchen display and loyalty on one flat NZD subscription, no per-order commission, no payments-processor lock-in. It includes a staff counter till on a tablet — staff ring up walk-up and phone orders, take cash with the change due, or mark the order paid on the venue’s own EFTPOS terminal — but there is no cash drawer, no docket printing and no card-present payment through SmakSpace, so the terminal keeps taking cards beside it. Kiosk-led and order-ahead venues drop Lightspeed entirely; venues that need a drawer and printed dockets keep theirs and run SmakSpace around it. We load your menu for you from our CSV template or a photo of the printed menu; customer lists we load on request. Supported in NZ time.

What's the best Lightspeed alternative for NZ cafés?

The best Lightspeed alternative for NZ cafés is one that bills in NZD instead of AUD, doesn't lock you into a single payments processor, and includes kitchen display without a per-screen add-on. SmakSpace is the NZ-built option that bundles self-order kiosks, online and QR ordering, table bookings, kitchen display and loyalty on a flat NZD subscription. It runs a staff counter till on a tablet — cash with the change due, or mark the order paid on your own terminal — but there is no cash drawer, no docket printing and no card-present payment through SmakSpace, so venues that need a drawer and printed dockets keep a till and run SmakSpace around it, while kiosk-led and order-ahead venues leave Lightspeed behind entirely. Either way your terminal stays exactly as it is, and we never surcharge what goes through it.

Migration

From Lightspeed to live in seven days.

Day 0

Free audit

We review your current Lightspeed setup, contract status, payments processor, KDS add-ons and integrations. We tell you exactly what we can match and what we cannot — including whether you can drop the till at all, or should keep it.

Day 1

Menu + customer setup

We load your menu items, categories and prices from our CSV template or a photo of the printed menu, and set up modifiers and options with you. Say the word and we load your customer list and seed loyalty points for your regulars. You sign off on all of it before it goes live.

Day 2

Payments setup

Your existing NZ EFTPOS terminal stays at the counter and keeps working exactly as it does now — we do not replace it and we do not connect to it. For orders placed online or by QR, we set up card payments through your own Stripe, Windcave or PayPal account. Kiosk orders are paid at the counter. No surcharge from us.

Day 3

Soft launch

Run SmakSpace and Lightspeed in parallel for a few days. Test QR ordering at one table, kitchen display on one station. Course-correct anything before the cutover.

Day 7

Decide

If you have gone kiosk-led or order-ahead, cancel Lightspeed once you are comfortable and we will help with the paperwork. If you still need a till for the counter, keep Lightspeed for that and run SmakSpace as the layer around it — that is a perfectly good outcome and we will say so.

Lightspeed migration FAQ

Real questions from NZ operators thinking about switching.

Many Lightspeed customers in New Zealand and Australia report receiving notices about a surcharge if they choose not to migrate to Lightspeed Payments. Check your current Lightspeed contract or invoices for the exact terms that apply to you. SmakSpace does not charge any such surcharge, and has no payments product to push you towards — your EFTPOS terminal and merchant agreement are none of our business.
Not straight from a Lightspeed export — our menu importer reads the SmakSpace CSV template only. We load your menu for you from that template (items, prices, categories, ingredients, labels and nutrition) and set up modifiers and options with you during onboarding. Or skip the template: point a camera at it and the AI builds the item list from the image, unpublished, for you to correct first. Both paths are included in our free migration support, with no per-row charge or setup fee. On request we also load your customer list for you and seed loyalty points for your regulars, and on larger menus we can add item photos by hand on request. Historical sales do not come across; export them from Lightspeed and keep the CSV for your records before you cancel.
Many Lightspeed contracts have annual minimums with cancellation fees. We review your specific contract during our free audit and tell you the cleanest exit path — including whether it makes sense to run both in parallel until the next renewal date.
Vend was a New Zealand-built retail POS acquired by Canada-based Lightspeed in 2021 and rebranded as Lightspeed Retail X-Series. SmakSpace is a separate, independently-built NZ alternative for the hospitality vertical (cafés, restaurants, takeaways, bars, food trucks). We are not a continuation of Vend, but operators who valued the original NZ-built Vend find that SmakSpace shares the same local-first ethos.
SmakSpace does not integrate with EFTPOS terminals — there is no cable, no pairing and no software link to any card terminal, whoever it is from. Your terminal sits on the counter and operates independently, exactly as it would if SmakSpace did not exist, so staff key in the amount as usual. That is the trade-off for never being locked to a payments processor and never being surcharged by us. Separately, for orders placed online or by QR, SmakSpace can take card payments through your own Stripe, Windcave or PayPal account — that is online payment, not your counter terminal. Kiosk orders are paid at the counter.
Honestly, it depends on your venue and we would rather say so now. SmakSpace does have a staff till: counter mode on a tablet, where your team rings up a walk-up or phone order, takes cash and sees the change due, or marks it paid on your own EFTPOS terminal, with one shared ticket list across devices and a queue that keeps taking orders when the internet drops. What it does not have is a cash drawer, docket or receipt printing, or card-present payment through SmakSpace, so it cannot hand a walk-up customer a printed docket or open a drawer the way Lightspeed does. If your orders come in ahead or at a self-order kiosk and you are card-dominant, you can move off Lightspeed entirely — the customer orders on their phone and pays online, or orders at a kiosk and pays at the counter, and either way the order goes straight to the kitchen display. If you run busy counter service, table service with tabs, or take a lot of cash, keep Lightspeed for the till and run SmakSpace around it for ordering, bookings, kitchen display and loyalty. Ask us on the call and we will tell you which one you are before you spend anything.
Onboarding is designed to take 48 hours from starting setup to taking your first direct order. We recommend running SmakSpace alongside Lightspeed for ~7 days to test the kitchen flow and QR ordering before cancelling Lightspeed.
Yes. There is nothing technical that prevents running both in parallel during migration. Many operators do this until they are comfortable that SmakSpace is handling their volume cleanly, then cancel Lightspeed at the next contract checkpoint.
SmakSpace is NZ$49/month (Starter), NZ$99/month (Professional, includes Kitchen Display), or NZ$179/month (Enterprise) — flat. Annual billing saves 20%. Lightspeed Restaurant pricing varies by region, processor agreement and add-ons; many operators report total monthly costs significantly higher than SmakSpace once Lightspeed Payments fees and KDS add-ons are included.
