The NZ-built alternative to Square for Restaurants

Square is global. SmakSpace is
built for NZ.

Square for Restaurants is a polished global product, but it isn't sold in New Zealand: no NZ support, no NZ EFTPOS link, no NZD pricing. SmakSpace is built in NZ and priced in NZD, works alongside your existing Smartpay, Worldline, Verifone or Windcave EFTPOS terminal, with bookings, KDS and loyalty bundled in.

In one paragraph

SmakSpace is the New Zealand-built alternative to Square for Restaurants for NZ cafés, restaurants and bars. Square is strong on hardware polish and global brand recognition but does not sell in New Zealand — there is no NZ store, pricing is published in USD or AUD, it has no link to NZ EFTPOS providers, and reservations and bundled loyalty are limited compared to its US feature set. SmakSpace is NZ-built and NZ-supported, prices in NZD, works alongside your existing Smartpay, Worldline, Verifone or Windcave EFTPOS terminal, and bundles self-order kiosks, online ordering, bookings, kitchen display and loyalty on a flat subscription.

Migration

From Square to live in a long weekend.

Day 0

Free audit

We review your Square for Restaurants setup, which Square hardware you're using, your payment processing fees, and which Square add-ons you have active (Loyalty, Marketing, Online).

Day 1

Menu + customer setup

We load your menu items, categories and prices from our CSV template or a photo of the printed menu; modifiers and options are set up with you during onboarding. On request we load your customer list and seed loyalty points for your regulars; historical sales stay in Square — export them for your records first.

Day 2

Payments setup

Your existing NZ EFTPOS terminal stays on the counter and keeps operating independently — SmakSpace does not connect to it. For orders placed online or by QR, we set up card payments through your own Stripe, Windcave or PayPal account. Kiosk orders are paid at the counter, on the terminal you already have.

Day 3

Parallel run

Run SmakSpace and Square for 1–2 weeks. Test QR ordering, kitchen flow, reservation booking. Confirm everything works the way you expect.

Day 14

Switch and cancel

If you have gone kiosk-led or order-ahead, cancel Square for Restaurants once you are comfortable; if you still want a till on the counter, keep it and run SmakSpace around it. We help with the cancellation paperwork and any final reconciliation.

Square migration FAQ

Real questions from NZ operators on Square today.

Square does not sell in New Zealand: there is no NZ store, no NZD pricing and no NZ support team. Its markets include the US, Australia, the UK, Canada, Ireland and Japan, so an NZ venue on Square is running an account opened overseas, with that country's currency and support hours and no link to NZ EFTPOS providers. SmakSpace is built and supported in NZ specifically.
Not straight from a Square export — our menu importer reads the SmakSpace CSV template only. We load your items, categories and prices for you from that template (it also takes ingredients, dietary labels and nutrition where you have them) and set up modifiers and options with you during onboarding — included in our free migration support. Or photograph the printed menu instead and the AI captures the items as drafts you approve. Customer lists and Square Loyalty balances do not come across on their own, but ask us during onboarding and we load your customer list for you and seed loyalty points for your regulars. Historical sales stay in Square, so export those and keep them for your records before you cancel.
You can sell or repurpose Square hardware — SmakSpace runs in any modern web browser on devices you already own. If you want a dedicated payment terminal, the NZ EFTPOS providers (Smartpay, Worldline, Verifone, Windcave) sell terminals that work alongside SmakSpace at no surcharge.
Square publishes plans in USD ($0 free, $49 Plus, $149 Premium per location). SmakSpace is also free to start (hosted QR menu, $0 forever), then NZ$49 / $99 / $179 per month flat (Starter / Professional / Enterprise) when you take orders — and includes more bundled features (bookings, KDS, loyalty) without add-on subscriptions. The right comparison is total monthly outlay including Square Loyalty / Marketing add-ons and Square Payments fees.
Square has limited native reservations and typically relies on integrations. SmakSpace includes a full booking module on Professional and Enterprise plans — interactive floor plan, automated confirmation emails, reminder emails on request, walk-in management, no-show flags. No separate booking subscription.
Yes — we recommend running both for 1–2 weeks during the switchover. Both can coexist on the same venue while you confirm the SmakSpace setup matches your expectations, then cancel Square at the next billing cycle.
Onboarding is designed to take 48 hours from starting setup to going live. A 1–2 week parallel run with Square is the safe path to a clean cutover.
