In one paragraph

Cancelling Lightspeed Restaurant in New Zealand involves checking the contract for cancellation notice periods and early-termination fees, exporting menu and customer data before access expires, settling outstanding Lightspeed Payments balances, and choosing a replacement POS that can import the exported data. Many Lightspeed contracts have annual minimums; the cleanest exit path is often at the next renewal date with parallel use of the replacement system during the overlap.

Six steps

A clean exit, in order.

1

Read your contract first

Open your Lightspeed contract (or the order confirmation email). Look for: cancellation notice period (typically 30-60 days), annual minimum commitment status, early-termination fee formula, and whether Lightspeed Payments has its own separate exit terms.

2

Export everything you can

Log in to Lightspeed Restaurant and export: menu items (CSV), customer list (CSV), loyalty / rewards history, historical sales (longest period available), reservation history if you use bookings, and any reports you might need for accounting. Save it all somewhere outside Lightspeed.

3

Reconcile Lightspeed Payments

If you process through Lightspeed Payments, check your last settlement date and confirm there are no pending settlements. Cancellation of the POS subscription typically doesn't automatically cancel the payments processor — that may be a separate request.

4

Stand up your replacement first

Don't cancel Lightspeed first then panic-buy a replacement. Get your new POS live, import your data, train your team on it, and run both systems in parallel for 1-2 weeks. Cancellation is much less stressful when the replacement is already humming.

5

Submit cancellation in writing

Lightspeed cancellation typically requires written notice — email or in-app ticket. Phone calls don't count. Confirm the effective date in writing and screenshot it. If they propose a "retention offer", note it for your records but don't feel obligated.

6

Confirm cancellation in writing

Ask for a written confirmation of: final billing date, final payments-processor settlement, data export window after cancellation (how long until your data is purged), and a confirmation that any auto-renewing add-ons (KDS screens, etc.) are also cancelled.

Lightspeed cancellation FAQ

Real questions from NZ operators leaving Lightspeed.

Many Lightspeed Restaurant contracts include annual minimums with a formula for early termination — typically the difference between what you've paid and the annual commitment. Read your specific contract; if you signed via a sales call without a written contract you may have more flexibility. NZ Consumer Guarantees Act protections may also apply if the service materially misrepresented features.
Lightspeed typically provides a 30-day post-cancellation window to access reports and exports, but this varies by contract and country. Export everything BEFORE you submit cancellation — don't rely on the post-cancellation window.
Lightspeed Payments settles deposits on its own schedule (typically T+2). Cancelling the POS subscription doesn't automatically pause payments settlement — your last few days of card sales will settle as usual. If you want to switch payments processors, give Lightspeed Payments separate notice.
Most modern NZ POS systems support the major NZ EFTPOS providers (Smartpay, Worldline, Verifone, Windcave). SmakSpace is one option — it lets you keep your existing terminal at no surcharge. The "surcharge for using your own EFTPOS" model that some operators report with Lightspeed Payments is not industry-standard; you can avoid it by choosing a POS that doesn't mandate its own payments processor.
Strongly recommended. 1-2 weeks of parallel operation lets your team learn the new system without pressure, catches any imported-data issues before they become real problems, and gives you a fallback if anything goes wrong. The cost of a few extra weeks of dual subscription is far less than a botched cutover at peak service.
For NZ cafés and restaurants migrating from Lightspeed or Kounta, SmakSpace offers a free audit: we review your contract, identify the cleanest exit path, and load your menu and customer list for you. We don't cancel on your behalf — that has to come from you in writing — but we handle the technical heavy lifting.
